Register Azure Resource Providers

To set up and operate the AI services, certain Azure Resource Providers must be registered in the production subscription being used.

An Azure Resource Provider provides the functionalities of an Azure service within a subscription. Only after registration can resources of the respective service be provisioned and used. The registration itself does not create Azure resources and does not disrupt any existing services.

Required Resource Providers

The following Resource Providers must be checked and registered in the production subscription if necessary:

Resource Provider Associated Azure Service Used by Purpose
Microsoft.Storage Azure Storage ABS / Azure Blob Storage Enables the creation and management of Azure storage accounts and associated storage resources, such as Blob Storage.
Microsoft.Search Azure AI Search ABS / Azure Blob Storage Enables the provisioning and management of an Azure AI Search service. This service is used to index, make searchable, and execute search queries on content from Azure Blob Storage.
Microsoft.CognitiveServices Azure AI Services Document Inbound Enables the provisioning and management of Azure AI Services, such as Azure OpenAI and other AI services. These provide AI models and AI functionalities for Document Inbound via Azure.

Prerequisites

To register Resource Providers, permission to register Resource Providers in the relevant Azure subscription is required. This permission is included in Azure roles such as Owner and Contributor.

Note

Before starting, ensure that the correct production subscription is selected. Registration only applies to the selected subscription and not across tenants.

Check and Register Resource Providers

  1. Open portal.azure.com and sign in with an authorized user account.

  2. Search for Subscriptions using the global search bar.

  3. Open the production subscription used for operating the AI services.

  4. In the left menu, under Settings, select Resource Providers.

  5. Search for the following Resource Providers one by one:

    • Microsoft.Storage
    • Microsoft.Search
    • Microsoft.CognitiveServices
  6. Check the registration status of each and take the appropriate action:

    Status Action
NotRegistered Select the Resource Provider and click Register.
Registering Wait until the status shows Registered. Refresh the view if necessary.
Registered No further action is required.
  7. Repeat the check until the status Registered is displayed for all three Resource Providers.

Check Registration

Registration is complete when all required Resource Providers show the status Registered. Subsequently, the necessary Azure resources can be provisioned and used in the production subscription.

Resource Provider Expected Status
Microsoft.Storage Registered
Microsoft.Search Registered
Microsoft.CognitiveServices Registered

Re-registration

The registration of an already registered Resource Provider can be triggered again via Re-register. This is only necessary if, for example, additional Azure regions have become available for a Resource Provider or if recommended by support.

Caution

Only register the Resource Providers needed for the deployed Azure services. Registration activates the respective service within the subscription but does not create resources such as storage accounts, search services, or Azure AI services.

Remove Resource Provider

A Resource Provider can be removed if necessary via Unregister.

Caution

Only remove a Resource Provider if the associated Azure service is no longer needed permanently in the production subscription. Removal may prevent the later provisioning or use of resources for that service.

A Resource Provider cannot be removed as long as there are still resources of the associated type in the subscription.

Proceed as follows:

  1. Open the production subscription in the Azure portal.

  2. In the left menu, under Settings, select Resource Providers.

  3. Search for the desired Resource Provider.

  4. Select the Resource Provider and click Unregister.

  5. Check if the status then reads NotRegistered.
