More control over document retention, synchronization and daily workflows
Document Central 29.0.1.0 introduces stronger Soft Label protection and more flexible retention workflows, alongside synchronization enhancements and a broad set of fixes for previews, SharePoint integration, document handling and administration.
Key features
More control over protected documents and retention-aware metadata workflows.
Stronger protection for documents with Soft Labels
Document Central now protects documents carrying a Soft Label against deletion, editing and moving. To change or remove such a document, its Soft Label must first be removed.
Administrators can define who may remove each Soft Label: users with sufficient document permissions or only Compliance Administrators. This supports different governance requirements while aligning Soft Label behavior more closely with SharePoint retention and record-management concepts.
- Protection by default. Labeled documents cannot be deleted, edited or moved until their Soft Label is removed.
- Configurable removal. Control whether removal is available to permitted users or restricted to Compliance Administrators.
More flexible retention label and metadata handling
Working with retention labels no longer requires removing a label simply to inspect or, where permitted, update document metadata. The available actions depend on the repository and retention state.
In SharePoint, View/Edit Metadata is available on labeled documents unless the document is a Regulatory Record or is locked as a declared Record. With Azure Blob Storage, View/Edit Metadata is available for a document entry carrying a Soft Label.
Developers can also create or remove retention labels through the public codeunit Retention Mgt. Pub in Simova.DMS.Feature.Compliance.RetentionLabel.
Smaller improvements
Additional capabilities for administrators and developers.
Document Entry Synchronization now offers a public function to synchronize a single record, a new event after Azure Blob Storage entries reach the Document Entry table but before the Background Synchronization table is cleared, and a dedicated drill-down view for tracking documents currently being synchronized.
Synchronization now passes table information as parameters instead of repeatedly fetching it. An optional hash-generation setting is available in Module Setup.
The SIM_DMS USER and SIM_DMS ADMIN permission sets now include Execute permissions for Synchronization Mgt. Pub and Retention Mgt. Pub.
Additional logging when Archive Queue Entry creation fails helps administrators and support teams investigate the cause.
Fixed and improved
Reliability updates across document previews, repositories, metadata, SharePoint integration and day-to-day workflows.
Documents can now be previewed when the DataGrid does not display version information.
Documents can now be added to the Document Basket even when no version entry is displayed.
ECSPAND documents now open correctly in preview when Remove File Extension is enabled.
Document relations using three keys now locate related documents correctly.
The Retention Crawler now logs and skips documents with invalid or overly long references instead of stopping processing for the remaining documents. The reference-length issue was also corrected.
GUID metadata values, including values selected from metadata templates, can now be edited and stored correctly.
Document Search now opens from the Admin Role Center without a transient error. Search functionality itself is unchanged.
Migrating from SharePoint to Azure Blob Storage now preserves document version counts, restoring accurate DataGrid information and previews.
Action required for existing entries: Previously migrated Document Entries are not corrected automatically. Go to Document Central Module Setup → Troubleshooting and run Recalculate Document Entry Version. Only entries with an incorrect version are updated.
Publishing Content Types with names longer than 50 characters no longer causes repository update errors.
If Content Types still appear incorrectly in the Subsite List: Open the relevant Document Library and run Remove Unconfigured Content Types. You can decide whether to remove them from SharePoint as well. Only remove Content Types from SharePoint after confirming they are not used by any documents.
Access Control Group codes containing parentheses no longer produce invalid filter errors in the Admin Role Center.
Inventory put-away documents can now be posted with FORNAV installed alongside Document Central, even when Document Central is inactive.
Document Search now processes supported wildcards *, | and .. consistently.
Repositories created and activated in the setup wizard now appear immediately in Repository Definition without a manual refresh.
Documents whose retention end date has already passed are no longer incorrectly marked as under retention in Document Central.
Uploading or moving documents through the DataGrid no longer shows a false “invalid argument” error after a successful operation.
The new Synchronization Mgt Pub CU uses a valid object ID. The previous Synchronization Mgt Pub codeunit is obsolete and should be replaced.
New Document Entries now display user names containing backslashes and other special characters correctly instead of URL-encoded values such as %5C.
Action required for existing entries: Previously stored user names are not automatically corrected. Open Document Central Module Setup → Troubleshooting → Correct Encoded Created By Values. Optionally set a Date Formula to limit the correction; otherwise all entries in the current repository are considered. Only entries whose user can still be found in Document Central are corrected.
The .ecspdf extension is now normalized to .pdf before preview when the corresponding removal option is configured.
Switching between versions of a document now refreshes the preview in List View and Page View.
Users with SIM_Core User and SIM DMS User roles can save ascending or descending DataGrid sort preferences without permission errors.
Creating Report Queue Entries through external sessions with Print on Event has been optimized for stability and responsiveness.
OnDocumentDownload no longer generates and stores unnecessary Base64 document content when using Print on Event through the Archive Queue.
DropZone now uses current field values, including External Document No., when a document has been modified before upload.
Content Type names are synchronized from Azure Blob Storage without incorrectly replacing spaces or special characters with encoded values.
Document Libraries located within SharePoint subsites can now be published through Document Central.
Dragging subjectless messages from older Classic Outlook versions into DMS now assigns valid filenames such as Unknown.msg instead of .msg.
Enabling Extract Email Attachments now opens the expected dialog to select which attachments to upload and their Content Types.
Document uploads to SharePoint libraries with a configured Site Path no longer fail because of missing or incorrect SharePoint IDs.
Drag-and-drop and shadow-print archiving no longer trigger invalid list-operation errors or create duplicate documents.
The email attachment preview now shows the attachment for the currently selected email, not the previously opened one.
The Users page no longer performs an expensive recursive security-group synchronization and Permission Set validation when opened.
Job and job-task relations no longer form circular references that could affect performance.
Known issue in the source material
This source entry describes a problem but does not state that it has been resolved.
Document Dispatch: Sales Order Content Type may be missing
The legacy entry reports that Sales Order / Verkaufsauftrag can be missing in the Document Dispatch profile Content Type lookup even though it exists in the Document Central Document Library List. The source describes this as an unresolved issue and does not confirm a fix.
